My old stomping ground – Newark, NJ

NOW: It’s a new era in Newark. Turbo-props are back after being phased out for jets following September 11th. This is the new Bombardier Q400 operated by Colgan Airlines. My favorite job in aviation so far was my time flying the ATR out of Newark, NJ in the years just prior to 9-11. That was a fun job. I remember the departure out over the Statue of Liberty, then west of the World Trade Center up the Hudson River and a right turn over Central Park at 1,200 feet before heading up over the North Shore of Long Island. Those were the days. I think the crews of this new turbo prop are going to enjoy Newark.

I hate being sick on days off

I have a nice stretch of five days off from work, and I am sick. Damn!

I’ve done nothing for the past three days but sleep and cough. It’s horrible. The only bright side was the bottle of NyQuil I went through yesterday. I love NyQuil when I’m sick. I haven’t been sick for a while either. I think it’s been over a year. I started washing my hands more often during the day, and I think that helps. But I caught something this time. My neighbor is sick too. I blame her. I think she passed her sickness through the wall.

I have two more days off then I head over to Hong Kong. The weather is great here today, but I think I’ll be sleeping here on the couch.

Ice road trucker

We drove to Big Lake, Alaska today. It is 52 miles northwest of Anchorage and with the winter weather and winter terrain it takes about an hour and a half to get there. A bridge across the Knik Arm to downtown Anchorage would reduce the travel time to 20 minutes. There’s talk of a bridge in the future. Who knows.At Big Lake we drove the mighty FJ right onto the frozen lake. We could hear the snow and ice crunching under the wheels. There were plowed paths for vehicles across the entire lake. Cross country skiers, ice-fisherman, ice skaters, snowmobiles (snowmachines if you’re an Alaskan) shared the ice with the vehicles. In the distance you can see Mt. McKinley.

I saw these two really cool MD-11 videos while reading Effervescent Ruminations.

The first one is a typical crosswind landing, and the second video gives a good example of what goes on in the cockpit just prior to takeoff – without the accents, of course!

The bunk

The best part about being a freight dog: flying the airplane in your pajamas. Anchorage to Hong Kong can be a twelve hour flight sometimes. So once we climb up to cruising altitude, the uniforms come off, pajamas go on, and we rotate turns sleeping in the bunk. I guess I should mention that there are three pilots instead of two on these long flights.

We finally got some snow in Anchorage – some that sticks anyway. I took this picture of Melissa today along the Coastal Trail. That’s the volcano Mount Spur in the background and you can see the chunks of ice floating by in the inlet.

Our house is about a hundred yards to her right. That’s why we like Alaska.
